Collaborative study on energy transfer process in space humansphere

The contribute safety and security of the humanosphere, we investigate energy transfer processes from the Sun to aurorae and radiation belts.

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (S) “Analyses and Verification of Particle Acceleration and Scattering by Electromagnetic Cyclotron Waves in Space Plasmas”

Principal Investigator: Yoshiharu Omura (FY 2017 – 2021)

We verify the acceleration mechanism through analysis of wave and particle data obtained by multiple spacecraft. We also try to test the applicability of the nonlinear acceleration process to different regions in space. Based on the acquired insights, we develop new instruments for observation of wave-particle interaction in space plasmas.

New mechanism associated with auroral breakup

Aurora breakup occurs when the electric current flowing into/out of the polar ionosphere starts to increase. Enormous energy is consumed in the polar ionosphere. By analyzing the numerical simulation result, we found the mechanism causing the auroral traveling surge. Three dynamo regions are identified, which are activated in order.
