Purpose

Humanity faces serious problems, such as the exponential increase in world population, global warming, shortage of energy and materials due to mass consumption of fossil resources, frequent disasters due to increasing extreme weather, and the spread of dreaded pathogens. The environment surrounding human population is also rapidly changing, threatening sustainable development and healthy living.

With the establishment of Research Institute for Sustainable Humanosphere (RISH), Kyoto University in 2004, we define the “Humanosphere”, as the spheres that support and interact with human activities, namely, “outer space“, “the atmosphere“, “the forest-sphere” and “the human living environment“. Our research activities involve to comprehensively understand the current situation in the “Humanosphere”, so that it will lead to the establishment of science and technology that are indispensable to sustainable development and contributing towards the betterment of society.

RISH started the activities of a new program named “Humanosphere Asia Research Node (ARN)” since 2016. ARN integrates our various facilities and human networks in ASEAN region and Japan for consolidating the international collaborative research on “Sustainable Humanosphere”. To further strengthen the international network in “Humanosphere Science”, RISH planned to organize with Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) as the first initiative.
