概要
Lignin Gordon Research Conferenceでは、植物バイオマスの主要成分であるリグニンの基礎と応用をテーマに、植物学、微生物学、化学、工学に渡る広範な専門領域で活躍するリグニン研究者を世界各国から招集し、最新の研究成果を共有し、植物バイオマス利用のブレークスルーに繋げるための分野横断的討論を行った。さらに、若手人材育成を主目的とするサテライト会議Lignin Gordon Research Seminarも開催した。
目的と具体的な内容
ゴードン研究会議(Gordon Research Conference;GRC)は、歴史と権威のある国際研究集会であり、ゴードン財団より厳選された特に重要度の高いscienceの専門分野について、世界各国から当該分野を代表する研究者を招集し、密な討論を行うものである。Lignin GRCは、植物バイオマスの主要成分であるリグニンの基礎と応用を主題とするGRCであり、植物学、微生物学、化学、工学に渡る広範な専門領域で活躍するリグニン研究者を世界各国から集め、最新の研究成果を共有し、植物バイオマス利用のブレークスルーに繋げるための分野横断的討論を行うことを趣旨としている。3度目の開催となる2024 Lignin GRCでは、申請者(Yuki Tobimatsu, 京都大学生存圏研究所)は、共同議長のLaura Bartley博士(米国ワシントン州立大学)と Jeremy Luterbacher博士(スイス連邦工科大学ローザンヌ校)、共同副議長のMojgan Nejad(米国ミシガン州立大学)とともに、共同副議長を務めた。世界23カ国から約150名のリグニン研究者が参加し、リグニンの生合成、代謝工学、分析手法、微生物分解、化学分解、マテリアル利用といった基礎研究から、企業研究者を中心とした産業利用といった、応用展開まで幅広い分野を網羅する8つのセッションにおいて、5日間に渡って、合計35件の招待講演と85件のポスター発表が行われた。また、若手人材育成を主目的とするサテライト会議Lignin Gordon Research Seminar(2024 Lignin GRS)を初めて開催した。2024 Lignin GRSには、主に大学院生とポスドク研究員ら約50名が参加し、2日間に渡って、14件の招待講演と約30件のポスター発表が行われた。
生存圏科学の発展や関連コミュニティの形成への貢献
本研究集会は、多岐に渡るリグニンの基礎・応用研究に関わるものであり、特にミッション1「環境診断・循環機能制御」、ミッション2「太陽エネルギー変換・高度利用」、ミッション5-2 「脱化石資源社会の構築(植物、バイオマス、エネルギー、材料)」をはじめとする生存圏ミッション活動と深く関係する。とりわけ、本研究集会の重要トピックの一つであるリグニンの利用法開発は、ミッション2やミッション5-2が掲げる「植物バイオマスの高度利用」の最重要課題の一つであり、その推進に直接的に関係するものである。約1週間に渡る、植物バイオマス(特にリグニン)研究を先導するトップ研究者らの密な研究討論と交流が行われ、ミッション活動やフラッグシップ共同研究の発展を含む生存圏科学の深化は勿論のこと、生存圏科学コミュニティーの発展、特に国際ネットワークの拡大と強化やコミュニティーにおける生存圏研究所のプレゼンス強化に寄与したと考えている。また、若手人材育成を主眼とするサテライト会議(Lignin GRS)やダイバーシティ関係のミニシンポジウム(GRC Power Hour)も企画され、生存圏科学に関わる人材育成やダイバーシティ推進にも寄与するものであった。
