Travel to Kyoto
Airports in Osaka,
Itami (ITM) and
Kansai (KIX), are nearest to Kyoto.
It takes 70-90 minutes by public transportations.
If you are not familiar with Japanese public transportation, an airport shuttle service
NearMe is convenient.
You can also fly into Tokyo,
Haneda (HND) and
Narita (NRT),
then move to Kyoto by train. It takes 3-4 hours by local and
Shinkansen bullet trains.
Train between Kansai International Airport and Kyoto Station
Japan railways (JR) Kansai-Airport Express "HARUKA" takes you to Kyoto Station in about 80 minutes without a train interchange. One-way ticket costs 3,110 yen (non-reserved) and 3,640 yen (reserved) per person. The train station is located on the first floor of the Terminal 1. HARUKA timetables

Bus between KIX/ITM and Kyoto Station
A limousine bus connects between KIX/ITM and Kyoto Station. It takes about 90 minutes and one-way ticket costs 2,800 yen per person. Timetables and bus stop information are here.
How to ride trains/busses cashless
Kansai One Pass is a useful physical "IC card"
(chargeable card ticket).
It can be used for almost all trains and buses in the Kansai area (which includes Osaka/Kyoto/Kobe/Nara).
It comes with some travellers' discounts and benefits.
This card is for non-Japanese nationals only and you need to show your passport in order to purchase it.
It can be purchased at limited locations such as JR Kansai Airport station, JR Kyoto station, and
some other places.
This card is sold for 3000 yen.

If you can't find a cheap hotel near Kyoto Station, Kyoto Kujo (one subway stop to Kyoto) is another option like

Obaku station
which is the nearest to
Kyoto University Uji Campus, it takes about 20 minutes by
JR Nara Line.

From Yodoyabashi station to Obaku station, it takes about one hour by
Keihan Main Line and
Keihan Uji Line.
