summary

Biomass provides renewable chemicals to replace petroleum resources. Our research develops bio-based polyurethane(PU) using simple, solvent-free, and low-energy processes. Polyurethane is a polymeric material formed by isocyanate and polyol. The PU market in 2023 is estimated at 87 billion U.S. dollars. Natural oils and plant-based chemicals are converted into PU foams and waterborne PU resins with low VOC emissions, offering safer alternatives to traditional formaldehyde adhesives in wood composites and coatings. These bio-based materials support clean production and reduce environmental impact. As buildings contribute about 37% of global carbon emissions, sustainable polymers and green manufacturing offer a promising pathway to lower-carbon construction and circular bio-economy development.
