=== The Symposium ===

The International Symposium on EPIC will be held at Kyoto University in Uji, Kyoto Japan during March 18 - 22, 2002. This symposium addresses

the dynamic, electrodynamic, composition and emission structures that characterize the equatorial-region middle atmosphere, thermosphere and ionosphere, and the processes responsible for these structures (including the lower atmosphere). A goal of the symposium is to assess our current knowledge of the equatorial atmosphere-ionosphere system, and to identify outstanding science questions and future observational needs.

=== Partial Support Program (NEW) ===

In order to encourage participation of young scientists and scientists from developing countries, the symposium offers a partial support of 700 USD (= about 86000 Japanese Yen) for at most 20 people. We also waive the registration fee for the awardees. This support will be enough to cover their hotel accommodation and daily allowance during the conference week. To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must be the speaker of an accepted oral or poster paper. A short application for this support must accompany the abstract submission in order to be considered. Selection will be made on a competitive basis upon evaluation of the papers by the conveners. One-page abstract typed on an A4 (or 8.5 X 11 inch) paper must be submitted to the EPIC Symposium Office (see below) no later than January 1, 2002.

=== Invited Speakers to the Symposium (NEW) ===

The conveners have solicited 31 scientists for invited talks at the symposium, and 27 of them have already decided to attend the symposium. The invited speakers and their preliminary titles are shown in the EPIC symposium web site:
