目的と具体的な内容

MU レーダー(中層・超高層大気レーダー: Middle and Upper atmosphere radar)は、1984(昭和59)年に滋賀県甲賀市信楽町の国有林内に設置されたアジア域最大の大気観測用大型レーダーであり、対流圏から超高層大気に至る大気の運動、大気循環を観測している。完成以来全国共同利用に供され、超高層物理学、気象学・大気物理学、天文学・宇宙物理学、電気・電子工学、宇宙工学など広範な分野にわたって多くの成果を上げてきた。完成から 25 周年を記念して、国際シンポジウムを開催し、研究成果報告と今後の全国国際共同利用研究の推進について議論した。

24 件の口頭発表(うち 17 件が招待講演)と 25 件のポスター発表が行われ、1 件当りの講演時間を長めに取り、十分な議論を行うことができた。また、発表内容を記録に残すため、アブストラクト集を印刷・刊行した。

生存圏科学の発展や関連コミュニティの形成への貢献

本シンポジウムは、生存圏研究所が掲げる 4 つのミッションのうち、主としてミッション 1 「環境計測・地球再生」に、一部ミッション 3 「宇宙環境・利用」に関連するものである。MU レーダーは完成当初から共同利用に供され、国内のみならず世界の多くの研究者に活発に利用され、常に新しい研究成果を生み出してきた。本シンポジウムでは、MU レーダー共同利用のさらなる発展のため、これまでの MU レーダーの足跡を総括し、今後の共同利用の推進について活発な議論が行われた。また、共同利用者以外の参加者も多く、新たな MU レーダー共同利用者の開拓が期待される。
